Sketch Sunday: Episode 4: “Love’s Labour Wrecked” by Neighborhood Watchmen. Guest Starring Shawn Pelofsky and Ben Kolina

9/21. Barry Sobel’s Skype Show @ Great American Music Hall. 859 O’Farrell St. SF. 8PM. $15. Featuring Bonnie McFarlane, Myq Kaplan, Mark Normand, Brandon Wardell, Steve Post, Drew Platt, F.C. Sierra, and David Studebaker.

Interstellar blast; Barry Sobel is back to save the universe!
Bay Area Comic Legend and Pop Culture Icon, Barry Sobel returns to his stand-up comedy roots in the Bay… and introduces a new form of entertainment, The Skype Show.
Sobel, host of The 3 Minute Talk Show, produced by Tom Hanks and currently seen on Hulu, will be performing live in concert, along with his favorite comedians from SF. Plus dropping in via Skype, comedians from all around the world!
Hot off an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Sobel returns to his favorite all-time venue, for one night only, Sept 21 9PM at The Great American Music Hall. Along with Barry. David Studebaker, Drew Platt, Steve Post, and FC Sierra.

[I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that there’s nothing like the Skype Show. Surging through Barry’s idiosyncratic pallet, affable energy and internet connection, it places comedy in thrilling peril from an application of convenience. It’s amazing to see so much commitment spoken into the void of a web camera, and entertaining to see the host (and cast of characters) scramble against the inherent technical difficulties.]

Scheduled to appear..
From NYC - Myq Kaplan ( Conan, Letterman )
From DC - Comedy Powerhouse and Festival Darling Brandon Wardell
From LA - Chris Fairbanks ( Fuel TV )
Along with SF upstarts Jeremy Talamantes, David Studebaker, and Trevor Hill performing in house.
During his recent stay back in the Bay, Barry has been embraced by a new era of comedians, many of whom will be making cameo drop

ins during the show. Dro Knows, Mean Dave, Danny Dechi and many more will be rounding out an insane line-up of comedy, all for only $5 bucks in advance ($7 at the door). And did we mention it’s a birthday party as well?!

[Barry Sobel has been making waves in the Bay Area for the last few weeks, to the adoration or chagrin of entire community, which is ironic due to his instrumental splash three decades ago. The 80s, where acts were fast and loose, persona was pristine and comedy was almost an organized criminal racket. It’s very rare to see an elder statesman from that time. When the bottom dropped out of the business people either returned to being ultra famous, abandoned home for greener pastures, did a complete career about face, dropped the habit all together or dropped into the ground. RARE, to see a comedian 100% committed, hungry, aching with independent moxie and enigmatic charisma. Additionally, comedian parties — birthdays, going-aways, key — are the definition of high fructose powder kegs as everyone gets drunk and feuds bubble over. So basically, this is a one-of-a-kind event that postscript anecdotes will fail to match its magic. Check the video below for a taste of Sobel’s brand of revelry]

SFWeekly’s Best of San Francisco 2013: A Comedy Perspective

Every year around this time has a fervor of excitement in the Bay Area comedy community. San Francisco is a crown hub of stand-up, a respected market for art and culture, and a mecca for a certain kind of comedy fan. It’s the soup: where the transcendent feed and microcosms emerge and evolve. That being said, it’s also a place with little industry, little structure, and massive turnover. Trying to get noticed, trying to become accomplished, is an arduous, lonesome, unappreciated task. That’s why, during this time of year, a progress report of sorts really sets the year’s tone for a select group of performers.

SFWeekly recently published it’s “Best of” collection of articles, and, as always, a motley group of comedians got the nod (and boost) of recognition.

[At the time of this writing, there’s are less than three days left to contribute to this project, which you should totally back. I’m incredibly biased insomuch that I have a respectful personal relationship with most of the cast, an overwhelming appreciation for the subject manner and universal belief of production that features the best of the Bay Area. There’s a lot more sordid, wasteful ways to spend your money. Why not contribute to a dream or three?]
