2/21. Karinda Dobbins HEADLINES the PM Show @ Sports Basement. 1590 Bryant St. 6:30pm. Free. Featuring OJ Patterson, Josh Argyle, Jason Dove and hosted by Juan Medina.
[YO! Sport Basement and the good folks at True Hustle Entertainment (Where the Hustle is the Truth) have a special place in SF Comedy lore. Their gracious amenities and off-center atmosphere makes for a tremendously ample entertainment experience. It’s like hanging out with that really rich kid; what’s the catch to their generosity? Nothing! Also, where do they get their fancy, rich-kid clothes? The Sports Basement, probably! The PM Show boasts a rotunda for the senses. Groove with your eyes, drink with your ears, laugh with your hearts. Plus, I’ve never been, so HEY!.

Karinda Dobbins, gracing the stage/performance area with a headlining set, is a comedian after my own heart. She’s smart, progressive, sharp and indomitable. It’s an honor to watch her, and a delight to witness the symbiotic nurturing between Karinda Dobbins and comedy, working together to enliven our world.]

"I’m trying to figure out what part of Oakland you’re from because you’re very quiet… I want to move there."

10/4. iL Pirata Comedy 8 Year Anniversary @ iL Pirata. 2007 16th St. 9pm. Free. Featuring Jabari Davis, Tony Sparks, Rudy O, David Gborie, Frankie Quinones, Clay Newman, Sean Keane, Karinda Dobbins, Shanti Charan, Eloisa Bravo, Yayne Abeba, Anthony Medina.
[I don’t know a more underground gem in the City than the monthly comedy showcase at iL Pirata. It’s kind of intimidating: nestled in the amber-slick off shoot of Portrero Hill; a pub-ish maze of aged leather seats and old souls; an ambiguous round of chairs circled by booths; an inherent casualness bordering on uncertainty. It all requires a level of commitment, to settle down, to nestle, to anticipate. The show never starts early, the subsequent dancing is sometimes forgotten, but in between — especially on anniversary shows — is a solid block of gold. It’s the 3-hour comedy festival, the after hours Comedy Day, the alternative “Sunday Showcase”; it’s every San Francisco Bay Area tradition wrapped up into a single instance. Go early, stay for the long haul, have a few drinks and tell me iL Pirata’s Anniversary show is anything you’ve ever experienced before in your life. If you claim me “wrong”, you’d be a liar, a fool or both, but you’ll also extremely satisfied.]

[Hand to Mouth Comedy is a unique fish in the bastion of creativity known as the City by the Bay. Most comedy shows purport primed performers providing pristine proclamations promoted by practice. Hand to Mouth toss it all out of the window. The thematic stand-up confluence guarantees freshness: acts shelved in lieu of new material – sometimes of atypical trajectory — to say succinctly what may never be said again. A thrilling challenge, a platform for enlightenment, a break from the norm, Hand to Mouth crystallizes the experimental, unearthing new gems along the way.]
