Courting Barbary: Day One (8/9/2013)

There’s too much pressure to have fun at Outside Lands. It’s is ground zero for art, culture, and astounding prices, celebrated over three days, currently in its sixth year. Many musicians and exhibitions litter the Golden Gate Park glens, but none are as important — for the purposes of this blog — as the Barbary tent. Ostensibly a comedy club, co-curated by SF Sketchfest, the parlor amplifies glade giggles like the historic Comedy Day, hopped up on steroids and Aderall.

Courting Barbary: Natasha Leggero [1 Day Left].

[I don’t know what’s to gain from promoting a sold out music, comedy, art festival a day before it’s supposed to happen. I don’t know the spread of this blog, and if it has any pull on the participants of said festival. I don’t know why I’m always so hungry at 4pm but I don’t eat until 6pm. What I do know is I’ve never seen Natasha Leggero onstage, in person, with eyes. She’s always been on the radar, with ubiquitous reputation and acerbic chic, and looks to be a highlight at the Barbary.]

Courting Barbary: Matt Braunger [5 Days Left]

[Matt Braunger’s San Francisco career is spotty at best. He hasn’t recorded an album here, makes sporadic appearances at various regional showcases/festivals, and I can’t remember the last time he went to the Golden Gate Bridge. Nevertheless, Braunger was featured at my first foray into the Barbary, a sticky Sunday night on bleacher seats. Not only has he been a phenomenal talent on an array of tiers, he’s one of the few comics that gets better — albeit, under the radar — every time he returns to town. He has three appearances at Outside Lands this year, get on it, San Francisco.]
