[I don’t know a more underground gem in the City than the monthly comedy showcase at iL Pirata. It’s kind of intimidating: nestled in the amber-slick off shoot of Portrero Hill; a pub-ish maze of aged leather seats and old souls; an ambiguous round of chairs circled by booths; an inherent casualness bordering on uncertainty. It all requires a level of commitment, to settle down, to nestle, to anticipate. The show never starts early, the subsequent dancing is sometimes forgotten, but in between — especially on anniversary shows — is a solid block of gold. It’s the 3-hour comedy festival, the after hours Comedy Day, the alternative “Sunday Showcase”; it’s every San Francisco Bay Area tradition wrapped up into a single instance. Go early, stay for the long haul, have a few drinks and tell me iL Pirata’s Anniversary show is anything you’ve ever experienced before in your life. If you claim me “wrong”, you’d be a liar, a fool or both, but you’ll also extremely satisfied.]
[This show will most likely fill up: Kurt Braunohler has been rising for a number of years (with a high potential for “discoverability”); he compliments San Francisco (especially the demin-and-plaid parade of the Mission); and comes constipated with goodies and intangibles. I’ve heard How Do I Land?, the cause for celebration. It’s good. Braunohler has bottled charisma and earnest into a handsome offering. Stay tuned for a review, get ready for the bash.]
Next Tuesday: San Francisco uber-blog, Uptown Almanac, is sponsoring a fantastic comedy show at the Roxie Theater. Featuring Nato Green, David Gborie, Lydia Popovich, OJ Patterson, Shanti Charan, Steve Hernandez and Sean Keane. And bottomless PBR! And me! But mostly the PBR.
