12/28. Club Chuckles 10th Anniversary Bash @ Hemlock Tavern. 1131 Polk St. SF. 9pm. $5. Featuring Joey Devine, Donny Divanian, Jesse Elias, Caitlin Gill, Sean Keane, Chris Thayer and more.

Outer-echeclon comedy showcase Club Chuckles is turning the ripe old age of 10. Launched in 2003 by Hemlock Tavern live music booker Anthony Bedard as a “Safeway Select”-style ploy to book less bands, Club Chuckles has achieved the cold-comfort distinction of becoming the currently longest-running “comedy-in-a-rock-club” monthly series in Americapresaging the alt rock/alt comedy crossover wet-dream of the 2000s, predating Patton Oswalt’s “The Comedians of Comedy” tour, and even birthing a comedy record label (Talent Moat). Club Chuckles also instituted the comedy world’s first-ever 10 drink maximum policy in the wake of the heckler uprising at Todd Barry’s impromptu crowd-work set at Hemlock in 2006. Sure, every late-to-the-party, ambulance-chasing Johnny Come(dy) Lately rock club is now trying to pad out their schedules with laffs & yuks, and the whole comedy-in-a-rock-club thing is now the toast of greater Brooklyn, but back in the early 2000s, this kind of programming nearly got Bedard sh*t-canned from his job until Neil Hamburger smashed the Hemlock’s all-time bar sales record.

[Club Chuckles is sending 2013 (and its 10th year) off with a bona fide champion. If you’re loyal to this site, it’s values, and it’s sentiments, you already love Kyle Kinane. For all his accomplishments and well-crafted, well-recieved, subtle takeover as a symbol (and voice) for the embodiment of “Comedy”, Kyle keeps it ghetto. He’s still for the everyman, still a product of humble hard work, a lyrical lush of charming deprecation. Spread the word, be apart of the Club Chuckles movement, and enjoy the illustrious privilege of San Francisco’s many hidden gems.]

Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction: David Gborie (8/15/2012)

Last night, I spent an evening at the Nerdmelt Theater in Los Angeles, CA, for the most recent edition of Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction. A star-studded line-up of comedians wrote absurdly sexual tales with subjects as divergent as Don Quixote and Alf. Congratulations to winners Solomon Georgio (Alvin and the Chipmunks) and Heather Thompson (Alf). Special shout-outs to former Bay Boys, Chris Thayer (Breaking Bad) and Bobcat Goldthwait (Green Eggs and Ham), as well as the litany of talent on display. In celebration, by permission, I present to you another winner, David Gborie, culled from a CEFF show in August at the Hemlock Tavern. NSFW. Enjoy.

Riding Miss Daisy

seankeane:

Last night, I participated in Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction, a monthly LA show that made its San Francisco debut last night. The competition is split into two parts: in the first, contestants read prepared pieces of erotic fan fiction (topics last night included Animaniacs, Angry Birds, and the sitcom Family Matters). Before they read, contestants from the second round draw topics from a bag, and write their own pieces while the prepared works are read. Second-round topics included Watership Down, Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, and X-Men. I was fortunate enough to draw Driving Miss Daisy as my topic, and I’ve included my piece after the jump.
