Bay 2 LA: A Riot LA Preview (Live from I-5)

California is crazy big and insanely spoiled. We used to just have gold, now we have the Internet, which is like printing your own gold. We are smaller than Texas yet we have more sports teams. Our fucking flag has a bear on it. Most importantly, we have at least five distinct comedy scenes, and two (or more?) major alt-comedy festivals (both occurring in the month of January).

I’m currently in between rest stops. Apparently Congress created this Dust Bowl surrounding the car with decay, the perfect backdrop for writing about frivolous abundance. Riot LA is a day away/the second display of emphatic array/with podcasts, talk shows and stand-up galore/legends, upstarts, food trucks and more!

12/28. Club Chuckles 10th Anniversary Bash @ Hemlock Tavern. 1131 Polk St. SF. 9pm. $5. Featuring Joey Devine, Donny Divanian, Jesse Elias, Caitlin Gill, Sean Keane, Chris Thayer and more.

Outer-echeclon comedy showcase Club Chuckles is turning the ripe old age of 10. Launched in 2003 by Hemlock Tavern live music booker Anthony Bedard as a “Safeway Select”-style ploy to book less bands, Club Chuckles has achieved the cold-comfort distinction of becoming the currently longest-running “comedy-in-a-rock-club” monthly series in Americapresaging the alt rock/alt comedy crossover wet-dream of the 2000s, predating Patton Oswalt’s “The Comedians of Comedy” tour, and even birthing a comedy record label (Talent Moat). Club Chuckles also instituted the comedy world’s first-ever 10 drink maximum policy in the wake of the heckler uprising at Todd Barry’s impromptu crowd-work set at Hemlock in 2006. Sure, every late-to-the-party, ambulance-chasing Johnny Come(dy) Lately rock club is now trying to pad out their schedules with laffs & yuks, and the whole comedy-in-a-rock-club thing is now the toast of greater Brooklyn, but back in the early 2000s, this kind of programming nearly got Bedard sh*t-canned from his job until Neil Hamburger smashed the Hemlock’s all-time bar sales record.

"The worrying starts in the first minute of the show, as NEIL HAMBURGER hacks his throat clear into the microphone and rasps out his first ‘zinger’ of a gag. It’s immediately clear this won’t be an easy one to watch. Hamburger is a pained figure, whimpering between jokes, sighing audibly. Hamburger is disgusted at himself, you see, for dispensing this filth but not as disgusted as he is at Britney Spears, David Carradine and the US band Smash Mouth." - The Guardian UK

[Holy Shit Readers! We’ve hit the 10-year-anniversary for Club Chuckles, San Francisco’s premiere left-of-center comedy producers. For whatever reason, we treat 10-years of anything to be of utmost importance. Much to our benefit, Club Chuckles is rolling out the red for an absolute steal for comedy nerds. Two cult figures — one local, the other national — in the intimate stomach of Tenderloin’s favorite rock club, without the pressure of drink minimums and silly “going out clothes”. Highly recommended.]

"It’s funny that there’s people protesting right outside ‘cause it’s like, the same thing: people yelling because they want to be listened to and no one cares."

Jesse Elias @ Stork Club/Storking Comedy [Paraphrase. Full Set Available: Here @ 11:30.]
