by Mary Van Note ( maryvannote )

Another year, another list.  This year comedy became my day job, not in the way I dreamed, but it became a day job nonetheless — as assistant to the booker of 3 comedy clubs in Northern California.  So yes, between performing on shows myself on nights off or catching some of the visiting headliners, plus watching clips and promoting comics during the day, I indeed saw a lot of comedy.  Here are some of my favorites of the year

[Mary Van Note always captured our attention at Courting Comedy — her Things We Made performance in 2009 stands out as a primary inspiration for jumping into the SF comedy scene. In addition to her onstage potency, MVN has always made it a point to point to the glittering lanterns rising in the distance. Check out her picks for the year of 2013.]

Check out Mary Van Note's killer combo of zombies and human rights. SuffRAGE!!!

Watch some of the funniest comedians from San Francisco in an intimate environment, where they’ll be sporting their best threads while telling their best jokes."I wanted a way to combine a couple of my favorite things; fashion and comedy. I looked around at some fellow performers and thought, hey, I’m not alone in being excited to dress up to perform,” says producer/host Mary Van Note, “I ask each performer to wear their favorite outfit, and they’ll be brought on stage with details on what they’re wearing like a fashion show. When you think about it, some of the comedy greats have such iconic style; think Bill Cosby’s sweater or Woody Allen’s glasses, Eddie Murphy’s red leather suit or Phyllis Diller’s feathers. Style has always been a part of comedy, just not as noticed, and Comedy Stylings is a way to celebrate the jokes and the style.” In addition to great comedy each show features costume changes, a vintage pop-up shop and a makeover. That’s a lot of fun to be happening in a basement of a video store in the Mission.

[These two were a delight last weekend at the San Francisco Punch Line. Mary was as perennially posh and Jen Kirkman exuded a rock star charisma]
