[My homeboy Dakin Hardwick has just dropped his annual “Nerd Guide to Sketchfest” and I love his categories of nerdom as it correlates to the festival: “Kitsch nerds”! “90s nerds”! “Taking down the system nerds”!]

Courting Sketchfest: 1/31. Storking Comedy @ Lost Weekend Video [5 Days Until Fest]
[“Thank you for your submission…” I’m done. I’ve paid my dues, finalized my information, and now I wait.
CUT TO: Naked, crying facedown on my couch. A Harry Potter party — that I’m invited to — is rumbling below me but I’m too depressed to walk down the stairs of my apartment complex.
PREVIOUSLY: “I got into Sketchfest,” said a respected peer. “I’m so excited for Sketchfest,” said a less-respected peer. My face is taut with a false smile. Facebook scrolls down filled with elations and congratulations, I recheck my e-mail, still devoid of…
CUT TO: Naked, crying facedown on my couch. I’ve worked too hard. I’m too unique to be left out. Blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda; the cold front of my internal angst clashes with the hot front of prideful indignation.
NOW: I’m performing at my first SF Sketchfest, at my own creation, at my favorite venue in the city. I’ve written an self-interview. I’ve made a Facebook event. I have a great line-up: Ever Mainard, Ivan Hernandez, Johnny Taylor, Cameron Vannini and Adam Newman. Still, afraid to celebrate because I’d hate to jinx, overhype, be bigger than my unassuming demeanor. Afraid to ask for help, love, committment, patronage, support, friendship or half the enthusiasm I give freely to any other creative mind. Afraid of the couch I’m currently sitting on. Courting Sketchfest: A Salute to Bored to Death w/ Jonathan Ames, Ted Danson, Zach Galifianakis and Jason Schwartzman @ Marines’ Memorial Theatre [8 Days Til Fest]

[Hey, I’ve never seen this show. I only got my girlfriend’s sister’s HBOGo password last July (fuck me). Nevertheless, this recently announced show poses the biggest swerve in Sketchfest schedule (if you Zach it, they will come). Also, the show — which, again, I’ve never seen — is an ode to film noir. If there’s on thing that San Francisco takes pride in is its fictional detectives (see: Monk, Bullitt, Eddie Murphy, and the works of Dashell Hammett). Catch these tickets while you can, boppers.]

Courting Sketchfest: BriTANicK @ The Eureka Theater [16 Days Until Fest]

[I wish I was already on this bandwagon. It’s unsettling. I’m supposed to know what’s what and on the level to a respectable degree, not caught with my dick in my hand outside of the UCB Theater Los Angeles. Alas, I stood in a queue for an hour hoping to enter a sold-out show wondering what the hell was happening. This is happening: a comedy duo that has impressed the likes of Joss Whedon and Lionsgate Films. A Youtube rabbit hole later and I feel like less of an idiot. Don’t be like me. Watch, learn, then experience BriTANicK for yourself.]

Courting Sketchfest: The Birthday Boys @ Brava Theaters [17 Days Left]

[It’s hard to pin-point why we adore the Birthday Boys. Maybe it’s their volume. At any given moment the seven can charge like a horde or descend like ninjas. Maybe it’s their attention to detail. Even if it’s absurdity (like a 7-person-sweater) the farce feels familiar and plausible. It’s hard to pin-point why we adore the Birthday Boys but their ascension into glory is highly watchable.]
